I was SUPER excited to see a new eatery going into the Maple Grove area, especially Mexican. I've tried Rusty Taco via the food truck (not sure if owners are the same), but I can tell you there are a couple common themes... Food Quality... I'll hang my hat on 'average' as I was not impressed, particularly the $2.50 paid for a taco the size of a quarter pound beef patty. The nachos were not something to be excited about, as any 5 year old could make (tortilla chips, shredded cheese and tomatoes). Food Price... Between my friend and I, we spend $20. Nachos, 2 drinks and 4 tacos...I could hit up Chipotle and walk away full, content and not feeling cheated when handing over my check card. Service... Painfully slow...painful. I will give them a small pass since they recently opened; however, customer retention will be tough when keeping them waiting for at least 15 minutes and providing inaccurate orders. A couple positives. Simple menu, open environment (garage door style that open up during warmer months) and fun assortment of sauces. I really want to like this place...but can't see myself getting there anytime soon...

I've been a regular at Rusty Taco for quite a while. The Maple Grove location tends to have horrible music as "ambiance" but their food is simply the best I've had in town - and gluten free too! So... bring your ear plugs and enjoy the awesome food!

Got the brisket, pork and fish tacos. The pork and fish were good but the brisket was a little dry. On one of our previous visits my wife had gotten one of the breakfast tacos. She said it was a little too salty. Also, their prices are a bit high for what you get. Most taquerias (like Andale Taqueria) only charge $2 for a chicken Taco and $2.50 at most for shrimp.

Awesome fish Taco! Pleasant to sit in patio, cool music, fast service and enjoy the food! Definately going again and will try bean taco.

The ingredients are fresh, but the food is devoid of flavor. So sorry that we let our BIL take us here. It looked legit, but like most ethnic food here, looking like it means nothing. It also doesn't help that they asked for my name and then tried not to laugh when I told them what it was or when they called it. My name isn't even that different as far as ethnic names go. The guy who made our food was talking excitedly about how great the habanero sauce was and how they boldly eat it on chips late at night. I asked if they did lines of it too. He had no clue what I meant. Ha ha ha. Oh, Minnesota...

This place is awesome, end of story. Huge variety of tacos, each better than the last and all $3 or less! Personal favs are the fried chicken, baja shrimp, bbq brisket and their namesake Rusty Taco (achiote pork). All packed with fresh ingredients and loads of flavor! I saw a few people complaining about this not being "authentic". Rusty Taco is an American style taco place, you think bbq brisket is a "traditional" taco? Those looking for authentic Mexican food should know better! Love this place for lunch or dinner, always good and always quick!

If this review were for tacos alone, it would be 5 stars. The BBQ brisket taco was awesome, lots of filling. For myself, one was enough for a meal. They use corn tortillas unlike the flavorless flour tacos you find at most places. Very, very good! To the twenty-something eye-rolling guy working the counter- I'm sorry that my mother threw an obvious wrench in your evening shift by asking if you had a larger water cup. Jeez, can't take her anywhere with that swallowing disorder of hers...

I'm kind of disappointed that this place only has 2 stars. I usually never write a review until I get home but I'm not going to wait. First off...for all of the people whining and bitching about $2.50 a taco, I think it's completely standard. I think the only place you'll find a better deal for that TYPE of taco is in Cali. The people working were super nice especially the woman who had short hair. Really good customer service. My boyfriend and I split 4 tacos. I got pretty full off of 2 tacos so for anyone complaining about not being full from anywhere between 2-4 tacos is on that AMMUUURICA obesity train. If you're looking to be insanely full in an UNHEALTHY way, then go to chipotle. But if you want something different and you want to just grab a bite to eat and be full in the NORMAL way (lol) then come here. I think the food was pretty good though. My favorite was the shrimp taco. I'll definitely get that again! The #1 was spicy to me...but then again... I think hot Cheetos are spicy (to help you get a feel of my spicy tolerance lol). It's worth checking out and I'll be coming back soon to try more and I DEFINITELY want to try the elotes next time (spicy corn).

Not sure what the appeal is, we tried 6 menu items including what was recommended and I was not impressed by Any of it. The fried. Chicken taco I got for my kids was a flavorless chicken strip with a tortilla and some shredded cheese. I friend the shrimp and brisket and was equally unimpressed, the shrimp so overly breaded and soggy with little sauce. The brisket was very dry and also had little flavor. My husband threw one of his choices away. I would not return.

It's sad when you have to go to McDonalds after eating here to feel satiated. We visited for lunch on a Saturday around noon. The line was long so we thought it must be good. I've eaten at the location over on Hennepin Ave and it was excellent. I was mistaken. The line was long because they were really slow. The food was uninspiring and the atmosphere could have been labeled "we work here because we couldn't get a job anywhere else". Pro Tip: the Rusty Taco margarita for $5 is exactly what it claims to be, cheap tequila and lime juice. No really, that's exactly what it tastes like. Save the five spot and spring for a beer from the cooler instead. After we left (because the portions are tiny) we headed over to McDonalds for a proper lunch. We won't be back to this location which is disappointing cause the other location is very good and has great service.

This place is the next best thing to the food truck. I absolutely love the Baja Shrimp Taco, the Fried Chicken Taco, the BBQ Brisket, & the Fish Taco are options that will please any palate! Each order is cooked right in front of you, so you know just how fresh they really are. If you have a picky child dining with you, they serve a wonderful cheese quesadilla! Bonus: There is an outdoor patio area for the warmer months...

It is a great option for quick food at a great price. The sopapillas are a nice addition for a desert.

Queso. That's really all that needs to be said... That and fried chicken taco. But seriously, queso. OH! And the cheap margaritas are surprisingly awesome.

This place has decent tacos, with a wide variety of meats to choose from. The breakfast tacos were unappetizing, but their normal tacos are pretty good. However, some of the meats are served cold. I've ordered the brisket tacos several times and the meat is always cold. Maybe I should ask them to microwave it before putting it on the tacos. The fried chicken tacos were served hot, so it probably depends on which meat you choose. I love their habanero salsa, which is spicier than most salsas you'd get at a taco restaurant. They also have beer and margaritas which I haven't tried but it's nice to know that they serve alcohol. They make you sign a receipt if you pay with a credit card, which makes you feel obligated to give a tip. Overall, a decent place to get tacos.

I love the unique options and great portion sizes that Rusty Taco provides. They really hit the mark as an urban, trendy taco joint. Don't expect authentic Mexican food, but expect high quality ingredients and great prices. I would definitely suggest getting flour tortillas instead of the corn tortillas (personal preference).

  • Kareem S.

Excellent food, cool atmosphere, reasonable price...definitely worth the drive up 494 for the best shrimp taco I have ever eaten. I thought the shrimp tacos were the pinnacle of culinary street tacos...then I had the Raja Taco....perfection. The amount of flavors in each bite is amazing. So then I decided to explore the menu further, and tried a breakfast taco, the Jalapeño Sausage Cheddar cheese one to be exact...minus the Jalapeño sausage, it was perfect. Equivalent to my knock out cheesy eggs I make at home. Rusty Taco is excellen....no complaints here. Be brave, and go all in for damn, good tacos.

Had high hopes. My wife, daughter and I stopped in on a Saturday afternoon to order some food to go. Was my first time at a Rusty Taco. Lots of choices on the menu which was intriguing. I was greeted decently by the guy at the register. I had some questions about some of the items and he kind of mumbled his responses without much expression. Kind of like I was the idiot. Made my order in a fashion that I thought was clear and concise. Payed and went to fill my drink cups. After filling my cups I turned to see the guy that took my order down by the assemblers talking to one of them and then they both looked back at me at slightly different times. (Kinda weird but maybe nothing.) I couldn't hear what they said but struck me as odd. There was a younger guy and a Latino women doing the food prep behind the counter. It was apparent that the guy was putting together my food order. IT. WAS. SOOO. SLOW. Like, way to slow for tacos. I've had Taco Bell take a fraction of the time. I ordered essentially 5 tacos, a quesadilla and chips/guac. Two of the tacos were the kids chicken which is a chicken tender in a tortilla shell. (Not complicated!) He just took his sweet time going from one thing to the next. He proceeded to put my chips in a paper boat and then say "Oh shoot, these were to go." Then put them in a bag. He called my name, threw in a couple hot sauce cups and I left. A couple more people had filed in while I was waiting but my order was the only one they were dealing with at the time. I jumped in the car and my Wife got back on the freeway and I started to dole out the food to her and my daughter. The quesadilla was fine and the kids chicken we're as advertised. I grabbed my first taco which was a BBQ beef brisket, AMAZING! Tons of flavor, tender meet and good sized. It was gone in a minute. Proceeded to grab my second taco only to find that THEY FORGOT ONE OF MY TACOS. C'mon! After contemplating turning around or calling I chalked it up to an unfortunate loss. (Each taco is $2.50.) I grab my second and FINAL taco, Fajita Chicken. Bleh. Chunks of dry chicken with a hint of seasoning, purple cabbage and way too much cilantro. No sauce or anything else. Not pleasant. I dumped hot sauce on it and finished it. I was saved by the generous amount of chips and guac that I had ordered. Those were good! Not impressed with the staff at all. Dressed in scrubby sweatshirt and street clothes. No quickness what so ever. I'll try the place again because the one taco was fantastic. But disappointed with the service.

Had the chicken nachos with queso. The chip's are fabulous! I would remind you they are $2.50 tacos so get 2 or more if you wanna be full! Can't wait to go again.

The tacos are just ok. I had a variety. The ground beef, steak, shrimp, chicken and pork. The shrimp was probably my favorite. The tacos were kinda cold and the corn tortillas were a little hard. I don't know if I would go back. The sauce was good.

I've been here 8 or 9 times, and the food is always very good. But the service tonight was atrocious. First, just like Chipotle's you're blasted with music when you walk in the door, so much so that we left a soon as we could because we had to yell over the music to hear each other. I asked someone behind the counter to turn it down, and he told me to go tell the guy at the register (more on him in a minute) where there was a line of people. Dude, I told you; now YOU go tell the guy at the register. I'm not going to wait in line while my food gets cold to tell him. When our food came, I was handed a tray of tacos for the five of us. I had no idea which was which, and it turns out that the woman behind the counter didn't either. And no one helped us identify them, so my family and I had to guest. Last, but certainly not least, what's with a guy at the register? Who in the world thought it was a good idea to have him deal with customers? He reeks of attitude, and not the good kind. He made my daughter feel bad because she was ordering fried fish tacos instead of grilled. And he wasn't kidding. She came back to the table feeling bad for having been dissed about it. I mean, why? And he only smiled when I ordered a grilled taco after my daughter had ordered (I didn't know about the exchange between my daughter and him because the music was so loud). There used to be an incredibly personable and friendly register guy who not only was fun to joke around with, but he helped us order, brought sauces to the table, and even comped us some chips because something came out late. Tonight was an entirely different experience, and it will be a while before I go back. Hopefully they will relegate grumpy to the kitchen. If he's at the register when I walk in, I'm walking back out. Finally, it hits a sour note when you order and pick up your own food, yet the charge bill has a line for a tip. At that point, they want me to tip for taking my order and my money? It's really annoying and unnecessary.

I've been to the Rusty Taco 3 or 4 times now and wanted to give my two cents to anyone willing to listen, err, read. First off, they have some awesome street tacos, a couple of good beers, TVs, and what looks like could be a fun patio. That being said, they have some tacos that could use some work. My favorites are the shrimp taco and the fried chicken taco as they are sooo good. As someone else said the price is pretty standard and I'm good and full with 3 tacos. I love sauces and they have 3 hot sauces that are pretty good to add a little kick if you want. I haven't tried the nachos but i know they fry their chips in-house and keep them in a warmer until they serve them. A couple of the downsides of this place are that a couple of the tacos are kind of plain (the beef ones). They could definitely add some more substance to make them better like the tacos i mentioned above. Also, the egg/breakfast taco's use the pre-mix egg stuff and they fry them on the grill and they end up coming out green colored. I am curious how this place will be in the summer as I wouldn't mind stopping in for a couple beers and tacos on the patio on my way home from work. One last thing is they have a rewards program so every visit you can get points towards free food and they also send out text coupons (just got one for 25% off next visit). I'll definitely keep stopping by if they keep serving my favs!

Living nearby, I really was hoping this would be a spot that I could hit up for good, quick, Mexican food pretty often. Unfortunately I don't know if I'll even give it a second shot. To start, I don't quite get what this place is trying to be. While I like the simple menu, everything else from ordering to receiving and eating your food is a total mess. I ordered 3 tacos, and after I ordered each one and gave directions like "no pico" or "no slaw" I was asked "is that the number 8?" or "is that 14?" which led to me having to repeat my very simple order a number of times. My fiancé and I ordered a total of 5 tacos, and it took about 15 minutes to get our order. It was fairly busy, so it's understandable but I don't understand how it wouldn't be a faster situation. When your order is ready they literally just shout out your name, which is really the most obnoxious system. There simply has to be a better way. Of the 3 tacos I ordered, exactly ZERO of them were made as I had asked, and it seems that they simply try to disguise their complete lack of attention to detail and quality by putting a ton of cilantro and slaw on top of every taco they make. The order was so sorry that when I picked up my first taco, all of the contents broke right through the soggy-bottomed, sopping wet, disgusting tortilla and fell to the table. Pathetic. Overall the taco's meats were totally flavorless and low quality. Virtually no sign of any type of seasoning. The tortilla is a pretty standard, low quality option that should probably be doubled up. I would not get a single thing I ordered again or recommend that someone else try them. It's not a personal preference issue, it's a total lack of almost anything redeemable outside of maybe the sauces they give you. (Actually they have them up at the counter and you get them yourself). In conclusion, I just don't know how a place that offers you next to nothing quality will survive. Tacos are way too cheap and easy to make and make well for a place like this to not offer something really good. When Chipotle and Qdoba seem like huge steps up in quality, you've got a problem. It's all just so half-assed. Even the margarita comes from a slush machine and is made with self-proclaimed "cheap tequila." Is that supposed to be cute? College kids concoct better drinks in their dorm rooms. Maybe I'll give it one last shot, but honestly this place just doesn't deserve my money based on what they deliver.

Getting the kinks worked out! Service was very good, very friendly. Had #5 Brisket, #11 BBQ Pork, #13 Gringo. All very good. Habanero salsa was especially spicy batch, very nice. All salsas were good. Others had #7 Fish, very good, spicy beef nachos, very good, chips and queso good. Cool look and ambience, clean Nice selection of beer and Margarita. Marketed as traditional Mexican street food, all homemade, I like it and will be back!

Pretty fast; friendly service; tasty tacos! Three menu options for kids. Shredded cheese does not come melted on the nachos, but they do have queso sauce you can add for an additional charge. Love that you can add avocado to any of the tacos for an additional charge as well.

  • Maria S.

I had the fish taco and the chicken taco. Loved every single incredible bite of it!!! It was fresh and delicious :) Can't wait to go again! Their margaritas were awesome too, better than most bars.

  • Robot D.

The Rusty Taco is as good as it gets for tacos in Minnesota! The variety is good, the tacos are well made and the habañero sauce is actually hot. Tacos are about $2.50 each and you will need 2-3 plus chips and guac for a good meal. Don't forget the hot sauce.

    (5)
  • Doug O.

Below expectations, small tacos, little flavor on the #2 taco I had, guacamole was good, chips were average. Staff was friendly enough, but didn't really have to do much. I wont go back.

As the other reviewers have noted, I too really wanted to like this place, however I couldn't have been more disappointed today. Ill start by saying the food was decent. It could have been better but that is easy to say without suggesting improvements. The service and operation of the store was bad. I couldn't tell who was in charge and it didnt seem like anyone knew what their roles were. Ill wait a couple months and try again, hopefully they figure it out. If not, they'll find it hard to keep the lights on.......

The cashier wasn't very helpful. Food was cold. It's hard to cook food cold. At the bottom of my nachos was a pile of salt. Small portions. Not going back

Eaten many times at the other Rusty Taco, but first time at this location. Out tacos were great. Try the brisket #5, the fried chicken #10 and I even enjoyed the fish taco #8 (numbers are from memory). Quality local beers on tap (Surly, Fulton) and a refrigerator stocked with Jarritos sodas. This location is properly staffed at lunch and the ingredients tasted freshly cooked. Id rather have three flavorful tacos here for $7.50 than the all too familiar carbo bomb from chipotle.

  • Dee D.

My husband & I decided to try this place on Sunday afternoon. It was empty, but one other couple there. We were surprised that you get one taco for $2.50, but we thought maybe they will be big? They came out tiny & disappointing. The flavors were bland to us (roasted pork taco, veggie taco & egg & cheese taco) granted maybe the tacos we picked weren't as flavorful as the other tacos on the menu, but I don't think we will go back there again.

    (2)
  • Reid S.

Great tacos (especially liked the fried chicken taco and their namesake, the rusty taco), at reasonable prices. Fed our family for about the same as a trip to Chipotle, but with some more unique flavor combinations than you can get at any of the mainstream Mexican QSR's. Service was fast and friendly, even with a sizeable Saturday dinner rush. Atmosphere is pretty stark and cool, but I bet it will warm up when they open the huge windows facing the patio this summer. So glad to have a new, unique option in the neighborhood!

  • Lindsay D.

Not disappointed at all!! Had food here twice in the last 2 days. The fish tacos were my favorite followed by the fried chicken tacos! Honorable mention for the gringo. Green chile salsa also impressed! Great place to try many different combinations! My advise: enjoy the experience and know even if you don't get your pico de gallo on the side, it will all be ok! Staff are more than happy to hear feedback and get it right! Give em a break maple grove and enjoy this great and local business!!!!

  • Sarha P.

The tacos were decent! I recommend the shrimp and pineapple. We went there for dinner though, bad idea, the menu isn't very kid friendly and the ground beef has a spice to it not all of the kids enjoyed. My oldest daughter got the chicken tacos which were very dry. My husband got the BBQ pork tacos and chicken nachos. The nachos were lacking, just bits of chicken and shredded unmelted cheese. The bottom of the nacho bowl was all what you would get from the bottom of a bag. All in all. An okay place for an adult who wants to run through for lunch and have a beer, or maybe some evening margaritas with friends. But definitely not for dinner and not for picky kids! There were 4 of us, we each got 3 tacos, drinks, the nachos and chips and guac... The bill was 49.60

    (3)
  • Chris H.

These are quite small for 2.50 a piece. The #5 was dry and had very little taste. The #8 was pretty good. I can't see myself going back due to the cost versus size, someone made the comments about getting more value at chipotle and I have to agree.

    (2)
  • Brian M.

Loved the food truck downtown so was excited to see them open in maple grove. I went with the Baja Shrimp Taco which I thought was excellent. The Baja sauce added a nice touch of heat without overpowering and was nicely complemented with the cilantro and sliced cabbage. I also had the rusty taco, which was good, but I thought a bit boring for a namesake taco. My wife, who frequently protests when I want Mexican, really liked the gringo and we both thought the salsas and sauces were fresh and well done. Four stars for the category and would opt for this over chipotle/Baja sole/etc any day.

  • Alicia P.

I have enjoyed the flavors in all the tacos I've tried so far; and the habanero sauce is GREAT (and actually spicy which can be hard to find in MN!). The pork and fish tacos have been my favorites. The service is fast & friendly. The one negative - a few times the meat has been on the dry side (especially the brisket). 2 tacos fill me up; which is under $6 - so very affordable meal.

    (4)
  • Mike M.

This has quickly become my favorite restaurant . The food is fresh and outstanding. The Service is great and very affordable. If you haven't been you need to give it a try

    (5)
  • Jerry U.

Is this place trying to be chipotle? No where on the menus did it say corn tortillas- no my favorite. Spicy beef taco meat had good flavor. Pepsi on the fountain and a bottle of coke (thank goodness) in a cooler. Beer in a self serve Cooler And behind the counter on tap?? The place seems confusing and it doesn't look as though they know who they want to be

    (2)
  • Taiowa W.

Super good tacos and cold beers to go along. What more could you want? Pay attention to the legend for the sauces because they get hot

    (5)
  • Scott F.

I didn't have expectations so it wasn't better or worse than I thought. The cheese was not melted on my chicken nachos at all. Shrimp tacos were very good, but the pork tacos I wouldn't order again. We'll come back to try other tacos, breakfast tacos and margaritas.

    (3)
  • Andy R.

This place has ironed out most of the wrinkles. The service is a bit slow, but the reason is because the food is made fresh to order. I had several different tacos that were good, but their grilled fish taco was excellent with a hint of heat. It was probably one of the best fish tacos I've had in a while. They have a couple good beers on tap like Summit, Surly and Fulton. The margaritas are decent, though a bit acidic. Overall, everything tastes very fresh. There was no hint of anything being frozen or pre-packaged.

    (4)
  • Corie H.

Great queso and Chips. However, not a fan of the ground beef or grilled chicken tacos. Aside from the meat, The toppings were fresh. Meat is not the worst, but definitely not as quality as other chain places (like Qdoba/Chipotle). I was really excited to try this place, but am leaving disappointed. HOWEVER, I am going to come back and try other meat (brisket tacos) to give it a fair chance of a better review next time. Pros also include- quick & friendly service, they allow dogs on the patio, and the patio area is nice (as is the inside).

    (2)
  • Rob M.

Tacos are good but not worth $2.50-$3 the establishment charges. On the couple occasions I have been here the service is mediocre and the tables are never clean. On my final visit the cashier was rude and there were 7 staff working in an empty restaurant yet the food was slow. When I didn't tip the cashier (when did cashiers begin earning tips?) he "thanked" me for not tipping.

  • Jill U.

We love our Rusty Taco in Maple Grove! The food is delicious and the margaritas are the best! We have had such great times there with family and friends. The patio is so inviting and the Rhagae music gives a vacation feel. The managers and staff are so friendly and really take the time to get to know you and give you great service. One of the best places to get together in Maple Grove!

  • Karen H.

Skip it! My second time here. Food took a long time (20-30 mins) and was just mediocre. If you're reading this, go somewhere else!

    (1)
  • Ken P.

Slow service! 15 minutes for 3 tacos and there were only 5 other customers in the building. Tortillas were stale, meat was dry, and veggies didn't have much flavor and were far from fresh. With great tacos available in the cities I will skip this place

    (1)
  • JoAnn B.

Really??....dogs allowed on the outside patio eating area ....gross. Plus it was left unattended and not tied up for awhile... So far I'm unimpressed by the food..which is to bad because it is a good location. I will not be returning now that Brueggers bagels is opening...hope we get a lot better quality of food from them!

  • Rick P.

Tried this place with some friends. First and last time here. Service was slow. Four out of five of us either had wrong or lost orders. Mediocre small tacos and nachos you can make better at home. Spending 2.50 on a very small dry taco and there are no combination meals or dessert items. Regular nachos had 3 sprinkes of cheese and tomatoes on it. I asked for jalapeños, but they don't have any... surprising. With a group would have been great to be able to pick 10 tacos for a reduced price or have a meal deal of some sort. All in all disappointing, but had fun with friends. Very busy, but suspect due to newness of the place. Never going back. Ciao CRUSTY Taco.

  • Scott N.

Pretty tasty tacos...Portion size is pretty teeny tiny but surprisingly at three tacos I'm pretty full. But at $3 a taco it adds up. Good salsa and without it the tacos would be pretty tasteless. I have only dined in once and sat outside because the inside is like an echo chamber and loud. My take out experience has been pretty good - turnaround time is quick. Staff is reasonably competent and friendly.

awesome tacos , ate there twice !!! wish there was one by us , I would eat there everyday I could !!!!

  • Erica G.

I've been here three times, twice to dine-in and once to go. I was excited for a new semi-fast but different dining option in Maple Grove, and I was not disappointed. I think some of the reviews of slow service were written shortly after opening, and it makes sense that staff would still be getting the kinks worked out. I did have to wait about 10 minutes the night I went in for take-out, but it was packed in there and the staff was quite apologetic and acknowledged the long wait. My other two visits the wait time was not an issue. Between my husband, two kids (ages 6 and 10) and myself we've tried the fried chicken, breakfast, shrimp, fish and gringo tacos. Fried chicken was a big hit with the husband and kids, I really like the gringo. It's spicy and flavorful. Fish taco was too bland, I've had much better. I'm looking forward to enjoying the patio this summer and would recommend this restaurant to others.
